Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring is a non-invasive test whereby a patient's coronary (or heart) arteries are scanned by a CT machine to determine the location and level of calcified plaque in the arteries. In less than ten minutes, the CT scan can provide potentially life-saving information expressed as a calcium score.
Calcium plaque in the arteries may effect the supply of blood in the heart muscle if severe. When fat and other substances exist within the inner layer of the arteries, this can lead to coronary artery disease (CAD) as well as heart attacks. Over time, if there is a continual build-up of plaque, the arteries can narrow or close off blood flow to the heart entirely, which may lead to a heart attack, sudden death or stroke.
Patients with high cholesterol, family history of heart attacks, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of smoking should consider getting a calcium score. Overweight or obese individuals are also good candidates for testing.
